The Truth about Hypnotism

Few things are more misunderstood than hypnotism and hypnotherapy.Most people get their understanding of hypnotism from movies and books,where the procedures and results are often exaggerated.Many think that people can be hypnotized against their will andmade to do terrible or embarrassing things.Nothing could be further from the truth. Hypnosis is a powerful,effective,and safe tool that can be used for such things as self improvement,losing weight or giving up smoking.

Our mind is controlled by both its conscious and sub-conscious parts.Our conscious mind is what we use for reasoning, making decisions,and judgments.Our sub-conscious mind automatically takes care of all of our bodily functions.It also contains our values,many of our memories,and it gives us the feelings of intuition that we often have.The conscious mind acts as a barrier to the sub-conscious,which is where hypnosis comes in.

Hypnotism is simply an enhanced state of relaxation.It allows the conscious mind to relax so the sub-conscious mind can take in knowledge and understanding.Because the sub-conscious mind is open to taking in new information,hypnotherapy is ideal for helping people give up addictions such as smoking,lose weight,or make strides toward self improvement.

In a typical hypnosis session,the patient sits in a chair and closes his eyes.The therapist begins with some relaxation techniques, such as asking the patient to imagine a wonderful,peaceful place. Hypnotherapy continues as the therapist encourages the patient to go to the peaceful place by way of a long,descending stairway,each step bringing the patient closer to his special place.As the patient descendsthe stairs in his mind,he begins to relax and each step heightens his relaxation.

Once the patient is totally relaxed,hypnotherapy can begin.The therapist offers suggestions and advice on the problem facing the patient,and this advice can be taken in and absorbed without the conscious mind standing in the way and putting up roadblocks. Throughout the hypnosis session,the patient is totally aware of what is happening,and he will usually end the session feeling very relaxed and more confident about solving his problem.

The Art Of Magic

What comes in to your mind when you hear the word “magic”? What is magic? What is the ART of magic? According to World Book Online Encyclopedia, “The word magic also refers to entertainment in which the performer does tricks of so-called magic. In such entertainment, neither the magicians nor the audience believes that the performer has supernatural powers.”

On the other hand, Paul Harris who is the author of “The Art of Astonishment” defines magicians as “guides to astonishment”. Thus, magic can be defined as “an application of guided astonishment.” The three main branches of magic are “stage magic”, “parlor magic” and “close-up magic”. Stage magic is any magic that can be done on a stage. Stage magic is used to depict the imagination. On the other hand, there’s also “stand-up” magic. If you’ve ever seen the Amazing Johnathan or Paul Kozak perform, you’ve been witness to stand-up magic.

Magic can be categorized by the motivations and the performance styles, but it does not end there. Here are some of the types of magic according to motivation:

Parlor magic is performed right on the same floor level as the audience, as opposed to a raised stage. Gospel is a special type of parlor magic that is used to demonstrate religious (mostly Christian) concepts. With the replacement of intimate nightclubs by super-mega-nightclubs and comedy clubs, classic parlor magic is rarely seen today. A distinctive branch of magic has developed quite recently, called “close-up”. Close-up magic, like the other styles of magic, has developed its own individual genres. Other types of close-up magic are “table-hopping”, “walk-around” and “street magic”. All these magic happens in the magician’s and/or spectator’s hands. This form of magic has become increasingly popular due to its intimate nature.

After discussing the various ways and motivations of magic, it seems appropriate to talk about the various types of “magic”. Eugene Burger, who co-authored the entitled “Magic and Meaning”, he mentioned the divisions of magic. First, there is the “primary magic” which is the imagination.

Secondary magic, on the other hand, is drawn out of the imagination and into the physical world. These include “ritual” magic and “stage” magic. Ritual magic is directed to enhance some aspect of life. A good example of this is magic performed by an Indian shaman (i.e. the rain dance around a campfire). Unlike stage magic, ritual magic relies on the imagination itself.

Other types of magic are:

Detached magic, which is a form of ritual magic, wherein the symbols used do not have direct significance to the individual invoking the magic. Reflexive or trickster magic uses deception. This differs from reduced deceptive magic as it focuses on reminding and telling audiences its deceptive nature. Such include gambling displays and “sucker tricks.

Top 5 tips towards effective relaxation techniques

As a general rule we all face much more demanding daily lives. The working day is getting longer and longer, and more of us are required to work longer hours or even get second jobs to pay for mortgages and other bills. As such, we find it difficult to give ourselves the time to relax and wind down that we need. Our body and mind need this time to rejuvenate and recover from the daily grind. A failure to take time out from this hectic daily schedule can have detrimental effects on our physical and mental well being. Even when we do get time to unwind we often find ourselves worrying about work or family matters and this can be just as damaging. By employing effective but simple relaxation techniques we can avoid stress, depression and physical illness.

1- The body and mind are very closely related and this means that there are a number of exercises that can be adopted that will not only improve our physical well being but act as excellent relaxation techniques. Techniques like this have been employed in yoga and other meditative arts that have developed over a great many years in many different cultures.

2- Relaxing the body will go a long way to improving your physical condition, however, the most effective relaxation techniques should combine the relaxing of the body and the mind. You should shut out any stressful thoughts about work or home; perhpas try repeating one word or short phrase over and over and if any obtrusuive thoughts do come into your mind then you should concentrate on the repetition again.

3- Only you really know the things that you find relaxing and you should try to do them as often as possible. Even if it’s only for a few minutes at a time you should make time. Just because your partner finds that relaxation techniques include playing sport or watching television doesn’t mean you have to do the same.

4- There are many different relaxation techniques from self hypnosis to yoga and others. Find one that interests you and suits you and learn about it. Study it carefully before you enrol in a course or begin teaching yourself. The key to good relaxation techniques is that they shouldn’t be difficult. If they are difficult that will force you to think about it, giving you stressful thoughts.

5- Don’t get stressed about relaxation techniques. If you’re struggling with an exercise or technique don’t worry. If you’re falling asleep every time you try self hypnosis or meditation don’t worry. These techniques are designed to help you not give you more things to worry about.
